What’s up with Friday the 13th? Let’s talk about the number 13 first. Is it unlucky? Where did that idea come from?
There are several theories about where the unlucky 13 idea came from. The first theory is that since the number 12 is biblical, the number right after that must be unlucky. In the Bible, the number 12 represents completeness–12 tribes, 12 disiples, and other examples. So, the number 13 is unknown, or uncomplete, therefore unlucky.
Another theory is that uneducated people used to count using their 10 fingers and 2 feet–allowing them to count to 12. Anything after that was considered unlucky.
What do the numerologist say? 13 has no significantly unlucky meaning. If you add the 1 and the 3 you get 4, which is actually a very good number.
And ironically, the number 4 in Asian countries is considered unlucky there! The Chinese word for four is the same sound as the word for death.
On our Friday the 13th show episode, we have a lot of fun exploring the history of the number 13 and what’s considered lucky or unlucky.
